Service Description

An introductory harmonium course led by Sat Tara and Sangat Dhyan Kaur. Singing and playing kirtan is an incredibly healing practice for yourself, your family, and your community. This online course is a way to begin your kirtan journey on the harmonium with three beautiful mantras, as sung by Snatam Kaur: Aad Guray Nameh, Chattar Chakkar Varatee, and the Mool Mantra. It includes deep, foundational teachings from the Sikh tradition of kirtan, focusing on how to play the harmonium, how to sing and understand musical notation, and how to keep rhythm. We also explore opening the voice to find your unique sound, and give you wonderful teachings and tools to experience your confidence, devotion, and meditative awareness in your kirtan practice. This course consists of 26 livestream sessions taught over 13 weeks by Sat Tara Kaur and Sangat Dhyan Kaur. You will meet two times each week, with one class being a core class, and the second class being a supportive mid-week check in. Both classes are important to attend. The Beginner Harmonium Course is a combination of group instruction and 1-to-1 feedback and guidance with each student. The attendees for this course range from being complete beginners with no prior musical experience, to people with musical experience, but who have had no prior experience with Sikh traditional kirtan. Sat Tara has worked with Snatam as her assistant and co-teacher since 2015, and Sangat Dhyan has been singing and studying Gurbani Kirtan for the last 8 years. She has also worked with Snatam in various ways. “Sat Tara Kaur is a kind and perceptive teacher, who has the capacity to meet her students at their level, and inspire them to embark on a journey into chanting that has the capacity to bring forth joy, personal discovery, and musical empowerment.” -Snatam "Sangat Dyan Kaur's peaceful and meditative nature will help you to feel relaxed and comfortable while learning, and her knowledge and experience with devotional music, and the Gurmukhi script, will support you in deepening your practice and your own learning experience." - Sahej Atma Please allow for 30-60 minutes of practice time each day while taking the course, for maximum benefit. You will need access to a harmonium, which can be ordered through our school here - https://www.kirtanandkundalini.com/shop In addition to the Saturday classes there will also be a mid-week practice and support class that is important to attend. Date and time for this mid-week TBD.
